1929年，草间弥生出生在日本长野县松本市的一个富裕家庭。但是，由于父亲的放荡生活和离家出走导致家庭分裂，母亲因此患上了歇斯底里症，这一切让草间弥生的童年记忆并不美好。在不到10岁的时候，草间弥生患上了一种神经性视听障碍疾病，这使她经常出现幻听、幻视，她看到的世界仿佛隔着一层斑点状的网。于是她开始画这些斑点，它们像是世界的细胞、分子，草间弥生把它们看成是来自宇宙和自然的信号。“地球也不过只是百万个圆点中的一个。”她用圆点来改变固有的形式感，在事物之间刻意地制造连续性，营造一种无限延伸的空间。然而，草间弥生表现出的对绘画的兴趣和她出现的幻觉，遭到了母亲的无视和嘲讽。
